LONDON (Reuters) - A statue of Sherlock Holmes is to be unveiled on the street where fans still write to him – even asking the world-famous fictional detective to find their missing pets. The bronze statue by British sculptor John Doubleday is being sponsored by the Abbey National building society, whose head office is located at 221B Baker Street, the home address of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s hero in the classic whodunnits. The company, announcing the statue‘s unveiling in September, said it still receives up to 40 letters a week from Sherlock Holmes fans – expressing admiration, inquiring after his health and seeking help. Each is faithfully answered. Surveys show that for both Japanese and Russian tourists, Sherlock Holmes is one of the top five reasons for visiting London. The stories have been translated into 184 languages.
