ent on Wednesday after hundreds of Gypsies, who call themselves Romanies, arrived in Finland last week on regular flights from Prague and Budapest saying they were fleeing persecution. Jussi Ilvesmaki, a senior official at the immigration office, said no Gypsies seemed to have arrived in Finland on Thursday after just a handful flew in on Wednesday. Over 1,000 Slovak Gypsies have sought asylum in Finland since the start of the year, with the bulk of them arriving in the last few weeks. Most of them face deportation as Finland believes the motivefor their migration is mainly economic, even though it has also warned Slovakia it might be doing too little to protect its Gypsy minority to qualify for EU membership.
