MARJAYOUN, Lebanon (Reuters) - Two Israeli soldiers were wounded on Friday when a land mine exploded in south Lebanon. A source in the South Lebanon Army (SLA), Israel‘s militia ally, said an Israeli officer and a private were wounded when a land mine destroyed their jeep near the town of Markaba on the western edge of a 15-km (nine-mile) zone Israel occupies in south Lebanon. He said the two were taken by helicopter to Israel for treatment. The Israeli army said the officer was seriously injured. In Beirut, Hizbollah said it had detonated a roadside bomb in the area at 0230 GMT, wounding two soldiers. Guerrillas of the Iranian-backed Hizbollah, the Shi‘ite Moslem "Party of God", are locked in a war of attrition with Israel and Israel‘s Lebanese militia allies. Israeli military sources said the army was checking whether the soldiers had accidentally walked into an area mined by Israel. Israel, which has occupied different parts of Lebanon since 1978, set up the so-called security zone in 1985 saying it needed to guard against potential cross-border attacks. Seven Israeli soldiers have been killed and 15 others injured in the zone so far this year.
