VIENNA - A baby boy was born during an evacuation flight by helicopter from a Austrian valley threatened by avalanches. "The birth began shortly after the helicopter took off," Gerald Pinzger, chief doctor at Reutte Hospital in Tyrol, said. Thousands of holidaymakers were flown out of snow-bound ski resorts in Tyrol on Thursday after avalanches devastated two villages and killed 35 people in the Paznaun valley on Tuesday and Wednesday. The boy made a hurried entrance into the world on Friday, arriving before the helicopter landed in Reutte just 20 minutes later. The evacuation of the pregnant woman had taken place in the village of Holzgau, in the Lech valley that borders Germany. Mother and son were in good condition.
