MADRID (Reuters) - The former leader of an apocalyptic sect was killed on the Spanish resort island of Ibiza by a man who had once accused him of sexual abuse, Civil Guard officials said on Wednesday. Eduardo Gonzalez‘s neck was slit by an 18-year-old former sect member on Tuesday after the two came out of an ice cream shop near Gonzalez‘s house, the officials said. Gonzalez, 51, made it to a nearby medical centre but bled to death a few minutes later. The Civil Guard on Wednesday arrested his alleged attacker, who confessed to committing the crime, officials said. Gonzalez, leader of the Edelweiss sect, was condemned in 1991 to 168 years in prison for various crimes related to the abuse and corruption of minors. He only served six years of the sentence before being released last year for good conduct. Edelweiss was organised as a sort of nature group that planned excursions into the countryside. After the group was disbanded in 1984, a scandal emerged over allegations that more than 75 young boys between 11 and 14 years had been forced to commit sexual acts. The boys, who were recruited to the group from their schools and made to swear a vow of silence, said during the 1991 trial that they had been forced to have sexual relations with leaders of the sect — all of whom denied the charges. The Civil Guard said the murder suspect had been involved in the sect as a child and had been among those who accused Gonzalez of sexual abuse. The sect promised children who became the "chosen ones" a trip to two planets after a nuclear catastrophe that leaders predicted for 1992. Gonzalez depicted himself as an extraterrestrial or as a prince who was sent to earth to teach the children how to survive the end of the world.
