MARJAYOUN, Lebanon (Reuters) - Israeli warplanes hit suspected Hizbollah targets in south Lebanon on Wednesday after the group detonated a roadside bomb, killing an Israeli soldier and wounding three, security and militia sources said. The bomb, planted on the edge of Israel`s volatile south Lebanon occupation zone, exploded near the soldiers while on patrol. The wounded soldiers were taken by helicopter to Israel for medical treatment, a pro-Israeli militia source said. The roadside bomb, a popular instrument of death in the region, raised to 10 the number of Israeli soldiers killed and 77 the number wounded in south Lebanon since the start of 1998. In Beirut, the Iranian-backed Sh`ite Moslem Hizbollah claimed responsibility for the attack. It did not give casualty figures. Hizbollah said it also attacked the Israeli patrol which was hit by the bomb with machineguns and grenades. Twenty minutes later, the group attacked Israeli reinforcements as well as an Israeli tank shortly afterwards. Shortly after the bombing, two Israeli Israeli warplanes screamed across south Lebanon, firing two rockets on suspected Hizbollah targets at Iqlim al-Toufah, a stronghold of the group. A security source said there were no immediate reports of casualties in the raid, which raised to 68 the number of Israeli air attacks on south Lebanon since the start of the year. A Lebanese security source said that after the air attack in south Lebanon, Israeli warplanes conducted mock raids in the southern part of Lebanon`s eastern Bekaa Valley, drawing anti-aircraft fire from Lebanese army units. Hizbollah, the Party of God, is waging a guerrilla war of attrition to oust Israeli troops and their South Lebanon Army (SLA) militia allies from the south - frequent site of air raids, bombings, rocket attacks and fierce ground clashes. Israel carved out a self-declared security zone in south Lebanon in 1985 to protect its northern borders from guerrilla attacks. The Iqlim al-Toufah area came under shelling from the zone shortly before Wednesday`s raid, the security source said. He said fighting was continuing after the air assault.
