BRATISLAVA (SITA) - Among the unemployed in Slovakia, there are visible factors that increase the probability that a person might lose a job. Typically in Slovakia, the percentage of unemployment is higher among the younger age group and the group of job seekers with low education. Another characteristic feature among the unemployed is that the better part of them is jobless for longer than one year. Data from the Slovak Statistics Bureau indicate that the employment rate in the first quarter of 1998 was 12.26 percent. This rate in the group of 15 to 24-year olds was as high as 24.2 percent. Other age groups report a lower unemployment rate than the average. The unemployment rate among people with elementary education is 29.1 percent. With the higher education, the unemployment rate decreases, and university graduates post only a 3-percent unemployment rate. Approximately 50.6 percent of all the unemployed have been jobless for more than one year. About 32 percent of the total unemployed have been seeking a job for more than two years. Only 6.2 percent of the total unemployed have been jobless up to one month.
