BRATISLAVA (SITA) - EU Commissioner Hans van der Broek believes in „flexible application“ of the election law that would satisfy legitimate and just demands of political parties and organizations. He aired in Bratislava, he believes that the Government will apply the revision to the Election Act so flexibly that it also will conciliate needs of other political bodies to access media that will shape the global atmosphere of society. At the same time he is certain that the elections will become „success and real reflection of the peoples will“. The European Union has identified priorities in which Slovakia should reach further progress. Free and just presidential, parliamentary, and local elections and a law on the use of minority languages are the most urgent priorities. The European Commission evaluation further calls for „additional steps to fortify the functioning of democratic institutions and non-governmental organizations.“ Hans van den Broek, who arrived in Bratislava on Wednesday, said this during his address at the event marking the 5th anniversary of the Foundation to Support Civil Activities. The controversial revision to the Election Act passed by Parliament last month was given teeth on Thursday, and it is now distributed in the Collection of Laws. Parliament passed the deputy revision to the Election Act that installs one election precinct and a five-percent threshold for each member of a coalition for entering Parliament, on May 20. Even a candidate list that includes a single member of another party is considered coalition. Moreover, the powers of the Interior Ministry and state administration in elections have increased thanks to the revision. The election campaign will start 30 days before the elections and only the state-run television and radio will be involved. Private media will not be involved in the campaign during this time.
