BRATISLAVA (SITA) - The European Commission, along with particular states, adopted the Strategy for Protecting Biodiversity (diversity of fauna and flora species). The strategy defines a framework for diversity protection proceedings, and it is a tool for the implementation of the Convention on Biodiversity within the European Commission, EC delegation head Christopher Bail said at a press conference during the 4th conference of signatories to the Convention on Biodiversity in Bratislava on Monday. EC considers the convention as the one of the greatest projects in the sphere of environment protection and a tool to treat climate changes. The non-governmental organizations said the expansion of trade industry is the greatest threat against biodiversity, and the EC has shaped a Commission for Trade and the Environment to protect biodiversity from this expansion. Bail says the commission keeps watch over the fulfillment and respect of agreements between the World Trade Organization and the Convention signatories. Within the strategy, the EC has elaborated guidelines for protecting biodiversity in relation to industry, transportation, a griculture, and tourism.
