BRATISLAVA (SITA) - The Party of the Democratic Left (SDL) proposed discussing the potential candidacy of Peter Tomka for the presidential post at the Monday round table convened by the Slovak National Party (SNS). Tomka drew the attention of the public as a successful Agent of Slovakia before the International Court of Justice in the Slovak-Hungarian case Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros. The SNS invited all parliamentary parties excluding Hungarian ones for the round table last week. The Movement of a Democratic Movement (HZDS) did not accept the invitation. SNS head Ján Slota declared that the current state, where Slovakia has no head of state, is unbearable and that a crisis might hover over Slovakia after parliamentary elections scheduled for the fall. Thus, he is of the opinion that the president should be elected by the time of the parliamentary elections. Leader of the Slovak Democratic Coalition (SDK) Mikuláš Dzurinda informed the participants of the round table that the deputies of the parties united in the SDK will propose discussing the petition for direct presidential elections initiated by the SDK and the Hungarian Coalition (MK), already signed by more than 300,000 people, in Parliament on May 12. However, Dzurinda admitted that the SDK is, in spite of this initiative, willing to discuss potential presidential candidates for the election in Parliament. The representatives of the SDK and the SDL have not revealed whether they would support the so-far known presidential candidates for the fourth round: Jozef Prokeš and Ján Sitek fielded by the SNS. At the round table, Dzurinda, Eduard Kukan, and Zdenka Tóthová represent the SDK, Jozef Migaš represents the SDL, and Ján Kvorka is for the Association of Slovak Workers (ZRS). Miroslav Maxon and Rudolf Delinga act on behalf of the New Agrarian Party (NAS).
