VIENNA (Reuters) - Czech President Vaclav Havel underwent treatment for an abscess in his abdomen late on Monday, but doctors said his condition was not life-threatening. The 61-year-old president had already suffered a lung complication following an emergency operation on his intestine last week, and his temperature also increased temporarily, his doctor at Innsbruck University said. "Yesterday in the afternoon there appeared a little abscess in the wound which was opened up and cleaned," said Professor Helmut Madersbacher, medical director at Innsbruck University. Madersbacher said Havel`s temperature was now falling andthat there was no sign of any tumour. Surgeons removed about 30 cm (12 inches) of Havel`s intestine in an emergency operation last Tuesday after he became ill while on holiday with his wife in the Tyrolean Alps. Doctors would conduct a scan to evaluate his condition, Madersbacher said. Havel had been making steady progress after a second operation on Saturday to relieve a build-up of mucus in his right lung which had interfered with his breathing. The Czech leader had been due to return to the Czech Republic in another week or so, but it was not clear how that might be affected by his condition. His programme has been cancelled until the end of May. Havel`s general health has not been good since he underwent a lung cancer operation in December, 1996. He nearly died of pneumonia and other complications after that surgery. He was fitted with a colostomy bag during the emergency surgery to bridge the gap left in his intestine and this was to be removed in a routine procedure in about six weeks, when the gap in his gut was to be closed.
