BONN (Reuters) - Chancellor Helmut Kohl's Christian Democrats (CDU) are narrowing the lead of the rival Social Democrats (SPD) ahead of Sunday's state election in SPD-held Lower Saxony, a poll published on Tuesday said. A survey carried out by the Emnid research group for TV news channel n-tv showed support for the CDU rising to 40 percent from the 36.4 percent it gained last time in 1994. Support for the centre-left SPD and current Lower Saxony state premier Gerhard Schroeder stood at 43 percent, compared to the 44.3 percent he won before. Schroeder, a pro-business SPD moderate who enjoys national support among voters, has said he would not run as candidate for chancellor if he loses more than two percent points from his 1994 result.
