BRATISLAVA (SITA) Only 18-20 percent of all high school graduates are given a chance to go to universities. During the upcoming years the number of university students should climb to 30 percent of all high school graduates, the Education Ministry`s University Department Director Marian Tolnay said after a Monday meeting the delegation of the German Bundestag`s committee for education, science, research, and technology, led by Karl-Hans Laermen. According to Tolnay, 35 percent of all high school students enroll at universities in Germany, while the Bundestag assumes that the number will climb to 42-45 percent. The German delegation, during its discussions with Education Ministry State Secretary Ondrej Nemcok, was mainly interested in the status of universities in Slovakia, related legislation, and the students` social status. Tolnay said that the Slovak side asked its German colleagues to provide wider, mainly financial support for German inst itutes in Slovakia. He said the German side was positive about this request. The delegation is also scheduled to meet representatives of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
