BRATISLAVA (SITA) -- At the Slovak-Austrian border crossing Petrzalka-Berg 11.4 kilos of 40-percent heroin in 23 packages were seized on Friday, January 9, under a joint program by Slovak, German, and Czech anti-drug squads, Viola Cehláriková, deputy director of Bratislava Regional Investigation Office, told a press conference on Monday. Two German citizens, ages 41 and 36, were attempting to smuggle the heroin in a Mercedes fuel tank. Cehláriková did not specify the heroin's point of origin or its destination. The confiscated heroin was enough for 256,000 doses with a market value estimated at about 40 million SKK. The alleged perpetrators face charges of illegal drug production and possession, and they are being held in custody. Customs Office spokesman Gustáv Takáč stated that this is the highest amount of an illegal drug ever seized in Slovakia.
