HONG KONG (Reuters) - The Hong Kong government found itself shortchanged at a property auction on Tuesday when it sold a plot of land to a woman bidder who hadn`t a cent to pay for it. The woman claimed she represented a blue chip company and bought the 5,306 square metre site in the Kowloon Bay industrial area with a closing bid of HK$890 million (US$115 million). But when it was time to pay, the woman caused pandemonium by failing to produce the money. "After 20 minutes the person failed to give us a certified cheque, so we had to cancel the sale," said government land agent Francois Ng. Police and paramedics were called to handle the woman, who appeared to be in her 50s and called herself "Wong Ong", the name of a female fictional hero who appeared as a kind of Robin Hood figure in black-and-white movies here in the 1950s and 60s. She was taken away in an ambulance. Ng said the land would be resold as soon as possible. If the site fetched less than Tuesday`s closing price, then the woman would have to pay the difference plus interest, he said.
