ATHENS – An eccentric Greek millionaire left his home town a fortune in his will, but there was a catch — he wanted tantalising details of relatives‘ sex lives publicly exposed first. Yiannis Katsanis bequeathed two billion drachmas (5.86 million euros) to his home town of Afitos in northern Greece to build a hospital. The trouble was he also left letters giving graphic accounts of relatives‘ alleged illicit affairs.
„These letters had to be read out in the village square (according to his will). Some of the letters pilloried relatives and other villagers on things that may or may not have happened many years ago,“ a local official told Alpha TV on Thursday. Villagers refused to comply with the condition but will get the money anyway. Lawyers secured a court ruling deleting the clause just months before the expiration of the will in January 2002.
