Actor-comedian Jim Carrey and television host Rosie O‘Donnell each plan to donate $1 million for disaster relief following last week‘s devastating attacks on America, their publicists said on Wednesday.
A statement said Carrey, one of the highest-paid performers in Hollywood, was making his donation to victims‘ families ‘‘with his deepest sympathy for their unredeemable personal losses.
He hopes this donation encourages other people to contribute as generously as they can.‘‘
O‘Donnell, whose daytime talks show is broadcast from New York City, was making her donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, a spokeswoman for the show‘s producer said.
O‘Donnell and the Canadian-born Carrey are the latest celebrities joining efforts to raise money for victims of four hijackings last Tuesday in which jetliners were crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in western Pennsylvania.
He will also be one of the stars taking part in a two-hour telethon on Friday to be simulcast by the four major broadcast networks.
In a separate charity project reminiscent of the 1985 „We Are the World‘‘ effort, pop singer Michael Jackson is leading a group of music stars to record a new song, „What More Can I Give,‘‘ with the goal of raising $50 million for survivors and victims of last Tuesday‘s tragedy.
Bill Maher, host of the late-night talk show „Politically Incorrect,‘‘ said he was donating a week‘s salary to relief efforts and urged others who were sidelined for a week by the tragedy to so the same if they could afford it.
In addition, Britney Spears said she will donate $1 for every ticket sold from each of the 31 concerts she will play on her upcoming North American tour to the children of New York City firefighters and police officers lost in the World Trade Center attack.
And Arista Records is re-releasing Whitney Houston‘s version of „The Star-Spangled Banner,‘‘ with proceeds benefiting disaster funds for the New York City police and firefighters. Reuters
