LOS ANGELES - Television‘s top awards show, the Emmys, stick to a familiar script on Thursday, rewarding a host of shows with nominations including „Six Feet Under,“ which was the most-nominated show with a total of 16. The HBO program about a family of funeral directors landed in the category for best television drama, where it will face stiff competition from three-time winner, White House show „The West Wing,“ perennial favorite mafia show „The Sopranos,“ top-rated „CSI: Crime Scene Investigation“ and thriller „24.“ CBS‘s „Everybody Loves Raymond“ and HBO‘s „Sex and the City“ shared honors as the most-nominated comedies, landing in 13 categories each, including best comedy. They will be joined in that category by last year‘s winner, „Friends,“ and „Will & Grace,“ both from NBC, as well as HBO‘s „Curb Your Enthusiasm.“
NBC‘s „The West Wing“ scored the second-highest number of nominations with a total of 15. „The Sopranos,“ which was left out of the voting last year, claimed 13 nominations to tie „Raymond“ and „Sex and the City“ at the No. 3 position among top nominated programs.
In acting categories, last year‘s winner for best actor in a drama, Michael Chiklis in „The Shield,“ returned to that grouping, along with past winner James Gandolfini for „The Sopranos,“ Peter Krause in „Six Feet Under,“ perennial nominee Martin Sheen in „The West Wing,“ and Kiefer Sutherland in „24.“ Nominees for best actor in a comedy were Ray Romano for „Everybody Loves Raymond,“ Bernie Mac in „The Bernie Mac Show,“ Matt LeBlanc in „Friends,“ Eric McCormack in „Will & Grace,“ Tony Shalhoub in „Monk,“ and Larry David in „Curb Your Enthusiasm.“ Jane Kaczmarek led the list of nominees in the best comedic actress category with her fourth straight nomination. She is joined by Patricia Heaton for „Everybody Loves Raymond,“ Jennifer Aniston in „Friends,“ Debra Messing in „Will & Grace“ and Sarah Jessica Parker in „Sex and the City.“
The best dramatic actress category also featured the familiar faces of Edie Falco in „The Sopranos,“ Allison Janney in „The West Wing,“ Marg Helgenberger for „CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,“ Jennifer Garner in „Alias,“ and Frances Conroy for „Six Feet Under.“
The Emmy Awards are the U.S. television industry‘s top honors, and the 55th annual broadcast of the awards program aired from Los Angeles on Sept. 21 on the Fox broadcast network.
