BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission is taking Portugal and Finland to court for failing to clean up their polluted beaches and inland lakes. More than 10 percent of Portugal‘s beaches and 79 percent of its inland waterways failed to respect European Union norms last year, the commission said in a statement on Friday. In the case of Finland the commission, the EU‘s executive, pinpointed four bathing areas in the province of Aland which failed to meet requirements. Both countries are also accused of insufficient monitoring of bathing waters. The commission also said it had begun legal action against nine of the 15 EU governments for failing to supply environmental reports required under EU law. It also threatened to sue Ireland for shortcomings in waste disposal systems in counties Cork and Limerick. Dublin must now persuade the commission it is respecting EU law or face legal action in the Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice.
