Bogota (dpa) - Leftist rebels from the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces on Tuesday freed 320 people kidnapped during their violent offensive last weekend. According to reports by the Colombian Army, 200 people were freed in the south of the country after the guerrillas lifted a street blockade they had erected between the cities of Pasto and Mocoa. The other 120 people were freed in the central district of Meta. FARC launched the offensive last week in various parts of the country, reportedly with the aim of gaining territory before the start of a fresh round of peace talks with the government scheduled for July 20. The Army said it was able to quell the offensive. Defence Minister Luis Fernando Ramirez characterised the offensive as a failure. At least 287 guerrillas were killed during fighting between themselves and the Army, which reported that at least 60 Army members and police were killed.
