g pictures by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his predecessor, the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. There were no pictures of President Mohammad Khatami despite the call by Khatami and his government on reformists to attend the rally. There were also no pro-Khatami supporters seen among the crowd. Also other news sources could see neither Khatami pictures nor supporters. The marchers shouted slogans calling for Moslems‘ unification and obedience to Khamenei, and further condemned counter-revolutionaries. The main speaker at Wednesday‘s rally was Deputy Speaker Hassan Rowhani, who warned of foreign support for the riots and vowed that Iran would respond to that support accordingly. Rowhani spoke at Teheran University which was the scene of Friday‘s bloody clashes between students and police. Earlier Wednesday, Khamenei called once again on all students and Islamists to "beware of the plot by enemies of the revolution and hooligans". "The arrested demonstrators are not aligned with the student movement but are pure and simply riot-mongers whose only aim is to seize political advantage and harm the Islamic system of Iran," Khatami told state-run television. The situation in other Teheran looked normal again although due to the rally, many streets were blocked again. On Tuesday night there were sporadic clashes between radical Islamists and pro-Khatami supporters at the university dormitory which were however not comparable to the violent mood of early morning hours. After the capital witnessed a riot on Tuesday, the situation was defused later in the day after revolutionary forces of the Basij (Mobilisation Forces) aided the police and anti-riot police forces to suppress the uprising and restore order. The Basij is close to the conservative opposition. Extensive damage was caused to various parts of Teheran but there are no reports yet on the exact extent of the damages. Also unclear is the number of probable casualties and injuries. Hundreds of demonstrators were arrested, most of them branded as "counter-revolutionaries" and "infidels". Such charges are usually dealt with in Iran by the death sentence.
