VIENNA (Reuters) - British Defence Secretary George Robertson said on Wednesday the crisis over Iraq‘s refusal to cooperate with United Nations weapons inspectors was grave. Robertson, talking to reporters at a one-off informal meeting of EU defence ministers in Vienna, said the bloc was united in its determination to see Iraq comply with U.N. Security Council resolutions. "We are meeting at a time where there is an urgent and serious crisis developing for the world community and I have no doubt that European defence ministers have one view," Robertson said after the crisis was briefly discussed. "With one voice there is one signal to Baghdad that compliance with the U.N. is the only alternative for Saddam Hussein at this time." Robertson reiterated his warning to the Iraqi president that he must either comply fully with the wishes of the international community or face the consequences. Britain and the United States have said military action remains an option. The EU defence ministers were meeting for a brainstorming session on ways to strengthen the bloc‘s military role to enable it to respond faster and more effectively to crises.
