LONDON (Reuters) - Women who are trying to get pregnant should reduce their alcohol intake or not drink at all, according to a report. While heavy drinking has long been known to hamper fertility, a study published in the British Medical Journal showed that even drinking five units of alcohol, equivalent to five glasses of wine, or less a week could affect women`s chances of getting pregnant. A team led by Dr Tina Kold Jensen at Denmark`s National University Hospital studied 430 Danish couples aged between 20 and 35 who were trying to conceive for the first time. Taking account of other factors such as smoking, male sperm counts, female weight and diseases in female reproductive organs, the study found that women who drank five units a week were twice as likely to conceive within six months as women drinking 10 units or more.
