TORONTO - An orang-utan from the Toronto Zoo died despite an heroic attempt by a former lifeguard and his girlfriend to rescue the animal after it fell in a moat during a cookie-feeding frenzy. „Kartiko,“ an eight-year-old Sumatra orang-utan, died of respiratory failure, said zoo spokesperson Patrick McCarthy. The incident occurred when a family visiting the zoo ignored the many „don‘t feed the animals“ signs and fed the orang-utans cookies and bread. Kartiko fell into the moat when he and five other orang-utans scuffled over the food. Orang-utans can‘t swim and the animal sank to the bottom of the moat while his helpless father and mother looked on.
