ATHENS (Reuters) - A huge forest fire engulfed a village near Athens on Tuesday, destroying at least 10 homes and damaging many others, police said. They said the flames were racing through the village of Anthoussa, about 25 km (15 miles) northeast of Athens at the foot of Mount Pendeli, where a fire has been burning since Sunday night. Anthoussa‘s mayor appealed on television for help, saying people in the village were in danger. More than 300 firemen have battled the huge forest fire that has destroyed another 10 homes, razed thousands of acres (hectares) of pine woods and is still raging unchecked. No injuries have been reported in the blaze, which is threatening several resort communities and is widely believed to be the work of arsonists. Greece has been plagued by scores of forest fires including several around the capital, where three firemen and a volunteer were burned to death last month in an effort to stop flames from reaching an Athens suburb.
