Foundation visited Iceland to meet Iceland`s Prime Minister David Oddsson, who has said he supports returning the 14-year-old whale to the wild. Keiko was caught in Icelandic waters and has spent all but two years of his life in captivity. He was the star attraction at a Mexican amusement park until he shot to fame in the 1993 hit movie about a whale freed from captivity. The film drew attention to Keiko`s medical problems, which included skin lesions, digestive problems and poor muscle tone blamed on inactivity in the warm water of his Mexican home. Authorities voiced concern about Keiko`s release, saying the whale would be unwelcome in its home waters because it might carry contagious diseases. But on Monday Iceland`s chief veterinary officer said tests on Keiko conducted in the United States showed there were no grounds for opposing his return.
