BRATISLAVA (SITA) - The organized crime has penetrated into the society. It endangers not only lives of the citizens but also paralyzes the performance of the police and jurisdiction. "We already can talk about a boom of some forms of organized crime - drug, racketeering and economic crimes," reads the Report on Safety Situation in Slovakia in 1997. The Slovak Parliament discussed the report in March 1998. The Slovak police, in 1997, have recorded more than 11 563 violent crimes, that is 173 more than before while cases in 90 percent are clarified. Compared to previous years, the percentage of clarification drops while the crime rate increases. According to the Interior Ministry, the number of ordered murders has increased. From 30 assassinations only 2 were cleared. The Police say the assassins are well prepared and erase most of the traces. Unemployed people, youth and the Gypsies are taking a great share in elevating the crime rate. The cabinet material claims the youth is motivated by the wave of violence disseminated by television and cinemas. However, the high alcohol and drug addiction also elevates the crime rate. The document claims blackmail is one of the most serious crimes while the police have recorded 153 cases from which 120 were cleared. The most frequent motifs are debt (62) and racketeering (35). Businessmen and their property are the most frequent targets of explosion attacks.
