LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Charlie Sheen was in a California hospital on Thursday after suffering an drug overdose, his father said. "The very first thing I want to assure you is that my son, Charlie Sheen, is very much alive," Martin Sheen -- who is also an actor -- told reporters. "He's doing very well. This is not an easy moment in our lives. We are in the stages right now of recovery. It is my hope that he will accept his recovery ..." Hospital spokeswoman Kris Carraway said Sheen was taken to the hospital by ambulance early on Wednesday and admitted to the critical care unit after complaining of tingling in his hands and trouble walking. Carraway said Sheen was listed in "fair and stable" condition and was no longer in the critical care unit. She said: "At a news conference, his father stood up and did state that Charlie suffered a drug overdose mixed with alcohol, and said the family was very worried about him. We and the family hope he will choose to go into some type of rehab," she said. Carraway said he was in good spirits late on Thursday, and was eating and talking.
