BRATISLAVA (SITA) - The Slovak parliamentary deputies passed the draft amendment to the election law on Wednesday. The revision stipulates the establishment of a single election precinct in Slovakia. The introduction of a 5 percent quorum for every party of a pre-election coalition has already aroused strong protests by the opposition and some non-governmental organizations. According to the revised law, a list of candidates that includes a name of a single member of a different party is considered a coalition. The currently valid Election Act stipulates a 5 percent quorum for individual parties, 7 percent for a two-party coalition, and 10 percent for a three-party coalition. The proposed revision effectively excludes pre-election coalitions from Slovakia's political arena. The original draft revision proposed excluding independent candidates from the possibility to run for election to Parliament.
