BELFAST (Reuters) - The victims of Northern Ireland`s 30-year conflict promised on Wednesday to "forgive but never forget" and pleaded with voters to back an historic peace accord. "We have seen enough suffering," said Glyn Roberts of the human rights support group FAIT (Families against Intimidation and Terrorism). In a province where 3,200 people have died in a long and bloody conflict, FAIT urged a "yes" vote in the May 22 referendum on the accord. Last week`s agreement maintained Northern Ireland`s links with Britain but also built cross-border bridges with the Irish Republic. Echoing the fears of police, he warned that dissident extremists could kill again in the runup to the referendum. Roberts appealed to the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to pardon the living and allow the dead finally to rest in peace. "The IRA must immediately lift all death threats on the people that they have exiled from Northern Ireland and allow them to rejoin their families in peace," he told reporters. FAIT counsels up to 400 families from both sides of the sectarian divide who are struggling to come to terms with the loss of relatives in a guerrilla conflict that has shaken Northern Ireland to the core. "The families want to forgive but never forget," said FAIT Director Sam Cushnahan. Under the agreement, many prisoners may be free within two years and Roberts conceded: "This will be a bitter pill for many of the victims to swallow. Most of them told us it is a price worth paying if it stops any other family in the future having to go through the same pain and agony of bereavement." FAIT was set up seven years ago to confront human rights abuses committed by the IRA in its fight for Irish unity and its Protestant guerrilla foes battling to stay British. It has set up its own database on the punishment shootings and beatings meted out by extremists in their own form of rough justice in the working class ghettos of Belfast. The victims range from 13 to 60. They have been scarred with acid, had their tongues stapled to tables and knees smashed with concrete slabs or obliterated with an electric drill. Alleged informers are shot dead. In darkened back alleys, some victims have been given what is grimly called "The 6-5 Special." They were shot in each ankle, kneecap and elbow and then thrown a five pence coin to call an ambulance. Roberts said: "The paramilitaries must now call a complete and absolute end to all forms of violence."
