PRISTINA, Serbia (Reuters) - Albanian sources said Serbian police attacked Albanian villages in western Kosovo on the eve a Western powers meeting to decide whether to tighten sanctions against Belgrade. The Kosovo Information Centre run by the LDK, the biggest ethnic Albanian political party, reported attacks on at least three villages near the border with Albania proper. There was no independent confirmation of the report. The centre said police units from the town of Pec, north of the villages of Glamocel, Dubrave, Glocane and Babaloc took part in assaults. "The villages were sealed off and later the sound of heavy Serb weapons and artillery was heard," The report added. "Several houses in Glocane were set on fire and people abandoned their homes." Serbian authorities allege the area is a stronghold of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) which is waging a guerrilla war against Serbian rule. At least 80 people were killed in a police crackdown on the KLA in Kosovo earlier this month. The U.S.-led Contact Group, which is pressing Yugoslavia to grant autonomy to the Kosovo Albanians, will decide on Wednesday whether to impose fresh sanctions on Belgrade for its policy towards the southern province.
