BRATISLAVA (Reuters) - A platoon of Slovak soldiers will join UN peace-keeping efforts in the Israeli occupied Golan Heights under Austrian supervision in May, a defence ministry official told the official Slovak news agency TASR. The move represents the first time Slovak troops have served in the Middle East. Under communism, Czechoslovakia, a member of the Warsaw Pact, had close economic and military ties with Syria. TASR said that 35 Slovak soldiers would join the U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) which is stationed on the Golan Heights between Syria and Israel.
