and a member of the team`s training staff were injured Friday night when the limousine they were riding in struck a tree in suburban Detroit on the way home from a team golf outing. The crash came just six days after Konstantinov and his teammates celebrated the Red Wings` first NHL Stanley Cup championship in 42 years. Konstantinov, a member of Detroit`s vaunted "Russian Five", remained in critical condition breathing with the help of a ventilator, according to Dr. James Robbins of William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. Robbins said physicians had inserted a monitor into the 30-year-old defenceman`s skull cavity to measure pressure on his brain. He also underwent minor surgery to repair an elbow tendon. In a positive sign, Robbins said Konstantinov did not need major brain surgery. The club`s Russian masseur Sergie Mnatsakanov, 43, also remained in critical condition with head injuries. The Red Wings grand old man, 39-year-old defenceman Fetisov, was upgraded from fair to good condition with chest contusions and a bruised lung. Richard Gnida, the driver of the limousine, was listed in good condition with no serious injuries. Robbins said doctors had not found any indication that alcohol played a role in the accident, which occurred when the limousine swerved to avoid a stalled truck and hit a tree. Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman, accompanied by several teammates, attended a news conference at the hospital Saturday. "Our entire organisation feels the same way as the city," said a shaken Yzerman. "We have great concern. We ask for everyone`s prayers in support of Vladi and Sergei Mnatsakanov." Stunned Red Wings fans stopped by the scene of the accident and the hospital Saturday to drop off get-well tokens. On Tuesday, more than a million fans cheered the team with a victory parade in downtown Detroit. The tough as nails Konstantinov, dubbed by fans "The Vladinator" was instrumental in the team`s brilliant defensive play in the post-season run to the Stanley Cup. He is one of three finalists for the Norris Trophy, presented annually to the best defenceman in the NHL. Fetisov, one of Russia`s all-time greatest hockey players, was a member of the legendary Soviet teams that won multiple Olympic and world championship gold medals in the 1980s.
