OHRID (REUTER) - A helicopter owned by one of Albania's failed pyramid savings schemes violated Macedonian airspace and landed at Ohrid airport in southern Macedonia, local media reported. The two passengers on board are believed to be connected with VEFA, one of Albania's biggest pyramid schemes, Macedonian Television said. The crash of such schemes provoked weeks of rioting and violence in Albania. After landing, the craft, which carries VEFA's logo, was immediately surrounded by police and the passengers taken into custody. There has been no official comment on their identity or the exact circumstances of the flight. Ohrid airport lies just 20 km (13 miles) from the Albanian border, which is currently guarded only on the Macedonian side. Albanian border posts in the area are gutted and deserted after Albanian army and police fled from the rebels who now control the region, Macedonian military sources say.
