BRATISLAVA (Reuters) - Slovakia said on Wednesday it did not see any reasons for its gypsies to seek political asylum in Britain and it considered their demands to be purely economically motivated. "The ministry does not recommend Slovak citizens of Roma (gypsy) origin to travel to Great Britain to ask for political asylum," said a Foreign Ministry statement. More than 150 gypsies from Slovakia arrived in the southern English port of Dover last weekend, adding to some 800 who had landed by ferry from France over the past few months. The ministry said Britain had so far rejected all their asylum applications and it considered this a proof that they had been exclusively economically motivated. "Because there exists no reason for politically motivated departure (from Slovakia), they (gypsies) are being legitimately accused of abusing the asylum right in the country," the statement said. "Such a development...does not contribute to relations between the Slovak Republic and Great Britain." According to official figures, Britain has considered 140 applications for asylum from Czech and Slovak refugees in the past year and rejected them all.
