JAKARTA (Reuter) - At least 17 people were killed when a truck carrying East Timorese pilgrims plunged into a ravine in the former Portuguese colony, the official Antara news agency reported on Wednesday. The truck was carrying scores of people who had just attended a Catholic church service at Mount Ramelau, presided over by Nobel laureate Bishop Carlos Belo of the Dili diocese and Bishop Basilio do Nascimento of the Baucau diocese. The truck plunged into a 25-metre (80-ft) deep ravine near Ledeluli village in Ermera district about 35 km (22 miles) southwest of the territory's capital Dili. The mostly Catholic territory of East Timor was annexed by predominantly Moslem Indonesia in 1976 in a move not recognised by the United Nations, which still regards Portugal as being the administering power in the enclave north of Australia.
