REGIONAL SCHOLARSHIP SUPPLEMENTARY GRANTS PROGRAM

Program Description: The Regional Scholarship Department of the Open Society Institute Budapest is pleased to announce the Regional Supplementary Grants Program, which provides grants to students from countries of the region. The program was established to support those scholars, who are interested to go on with their studies in Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltics, or the Newly Independent States.

The Regional Supplementary Grants Program will offer small grants to graduate or undergraduate students who wish to begin or continue their studies at recognised institutions of higher education in the region.

How to Apply:

a personal statement indicating why you wish to study your chosen field, why you have selected the particular institution to which you have been admitted, and what you hope to pursue after finishing your course of study;

official transcripts from all institutions attended with certified English translations;

2 letters of reference from academic supervisors or lecturers;

indication that you have been admitted to your chosen institution for the fall term

(e. g., a notarised letter from a professor that you have been enrolled for the coming year);

a detailed budget of expenses for the entire academic year; and

official evidence of partial funding from other sources, including institutional, outside and portsonal resources (e. g., award letters, bank statements, etc.)

Candidates must complete the application form in English, keep an additional copy of documents for their own records and send the original directly to the Regional Scholarship Department. Although there is no application deadline, those requests which will arrive to the below address by Friday, 2 August, 1996, will be taken into consideration before the beginning of the 1996-97 Academic Year, Further applications will be reviewed during the fall term.

The Research Support Scheme of the Higher Education Support Programme/OSI is a part of the Soros Foundations network which is aimed at supporting innovative research of individuals or groups of researchers in social sciences and humanities interested in Central and Eastern European issues. In 1997 research projects in Art, Economics, Education, European Studies, History, Human Ecology and Sustainable Development, Law, Linguistics, Literature, Philosophy, Political Science, Social Policy, Social Psychology, Sociology, Urban and Population Studies will be supported.

Priority will be given to researches who are under 45. Special attention is given to multi-disciplinary and comparative projects.
