CAPE CANAVERAL (REUTER) - The space shuttle Discovery lit up the Florida night sky on Tuesday as it blasted off on a mission to refurbish the Hubble Space Telescope. The $2 billion reusable spaceship lifted off from Florida's Kennedy Space Centre at 3:55 a.m. EST (8:55 GMT), beginning a two-day chase through space to catch the orbiting observatory. During the 10-day mission, the shuttle crew planned to make four spacewalks to install two new scientific instruments aboard the telescope and refurbish various ageing components. It will be the first time astronauts have visited Hubble since a 1993 repair mission corrected its blurred vision. The observatory was launched in 1990. The astronauts will treat the telescope with the greatest of care to avoid damaging its fragile solar panels.
